About Snowballr

Snowballr is a free financial calculator and education platform built around one idea: your money should be easy to visualize. Most existing calculators are clunky, ad-heavy, hidden behind sign-up walls, or visually stuck in 2015. We built the tools we actually wanted to use — and made them free for everyone.

What you get here

  • 10+ interactive calculators with live charts: compound interest, compound investment, debt snowball, retirement, savings goals, mortgage, car loan, student loan, simple interest, inflation.
  • Long-form guides covering the Rule of 72, 401(k) vs Roth IRA, dollar-cost averaging, emergency fund sizing, sequence-of-returns risk, expense ratios, and current-year contribution limits.
  • Pre-built scenarios — retire at 40, latte factor, $1M goal, FIRE, college fund — that load instantly into the calculator.
  • Embeddable widgets for bloggers and educators at /embed.
  • No sign-up. No paywall. No data collection beyond standard analytics. Ever.

Who writes here

All articles are written and reviewed by the Snowballr Editorial Team — an independent group of writers and software engineers focused on personal finance, retirement planning, and consumer protection. We are not licensed financial advisors and we do not pretend to be. Every published claim is verified against a primary source (IRS, BLS, FINRA, NYU Stern, Yale Shiller, Vanguard research, Trinity Study, peer-reviewed journals) before it goes live.

Our full process — sourcing, fact-checking, review cadence, corrections policy, and conflict-of-interest disclosure — is documented on our editorial standards page. If you find a mistake, email us and we'll fix it in the open.

Our methodology

Every statistic on this site is sourced from primary research and historical market data. We cite Trinity Study (4% rule), Vanguard research (lump sum vs DCA), NYU Stern (S&P 500 historical returns), Yale Shiller dataset, BLS CPI data, FDIC, and IRS publications. The full source list is on the homepage under Sources & methodology.

Calculations use standard compound interest math — A = P(1 + r/n)(nt) for principal, future value of annuity for monthly contributions. Outputs are mathematically exact for the inputs you provide. Real-world returns vary year to year — historical averages are the basis for expected values, never guarantees.

What we are not

  • Not a brokerage. We do not sell stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, crypto, or any other investment product.
  • Not a financial advisor. Nothing on this site is personalized financial, tax, or legal advice. For decisions involving your specific situation, consult a fee-only fiduciary advisor.
  • Not a data harvester. We do not require sign-up. We do not sell your data. Standard analytics (Vercel + Google Analytics if cookies accepted) are the only tracking, used to understand which calculators are most useful.
  • Not paid by anyone we recommend. When we link to FINRA BrokerCheck, the SEC, or specific broker platforms, those are educational references — we receive no commission or referral fee.

How the site stays free

Display ads via Google AdSense. That's the entire business model. Ads are lazy-loaded only after you scroll near them and after you accept cookies, so they don't slow down the calculators or harvest data without consent. There are no popups, no subscription tiers, no premium features locked behind paywalls.

Protect yourself before you invest

Investment fraud costs Americans roughly $4.6 billion every year. Most of it is preventable if you know the red flags and verify before sending money. We built a full guide: Protect your money — fraud types, red flags, how to verify any financial professional with FINRA BrokerCheck and the SEC, and what to do if you have already been scammed.
